First-time author struggling to find a literary agent or confused about writing a query letter?
Already called quits on the dark art of traditional publishing, but lonely trying to navigate the labyrinth of self-publishing?
Fed-up of endlessly scrolling for writing competitions or literary magazines to get noticed?
Beating yourself up whilst figuring how to fork out for writing retreats, creative writing courses, or your MFA because you don’t think you’re “good enough” yet?
Stop. Breathe. There is another way.
Let us introduce ourselves. Hello, we’re Hack. Nice to meet you.
Who are we for?
Hack Publishing is for new and emerging writers who are apathetic to #tradpub, resistant to self-publishing, and hungry to forge a new publishing ecosystem together. We’re also for the readers who champion that change.
We’re for the misfits, eccentrics, and weirdos. Writers who frantically scribble in the margins, readers who dog-ear their books, those who:
- Aspire to publish, but find the industry alien.
- Rebel against arbitrary literary standards and expectations.
- Play with and laugh at life’s horrors.
- Hoard their writing (naughty, stop that!).
- Have developed a taste for writing with bite.
This is the space between publishing.
If you are looking for a place to be messy, want to chase your dreams of getting published, and share in a love for fabulous words and magical writing, you’ve found it.
Why Hack?
Our values are SPACE, PLAYFULNESS, ALLIANCE, COURAGE, & EVOLUTION
- We give you space to share your writing. Not just to put it out into the world, but to gain you the vital feedback to elevate its quality and impact. Fail fast, make mistakes, carve your own space in between.
- We act playfully in our approach because writing is creative. Experiment, embrace silliness, get messy–it’s meant to be fun!
- We forge an alliance. There is no need for a top-down authority. We’re your friendly support system, an ally. Think of us like the sous chef where our writers are head chefs and readers are foodies hungry for tasty word scran.
- We are courageous because our writers are. We follow them on the quests they choose…whatever adventure…whatever monsters they bravely face…however long and arduous the journey may be.
- We evolve as we learn and develop together.
We thrive on contingency and reciprocity.
“What the [expletive] does that mean?” you might ask?
Well, it means we are real humans creating and connecting with other real humans. Bin the fluff. We celebrate messy chaos, champion unfettered feeling, and denounce all corporate fodder.
- We create through development. We are for writers developing their craft, editors developing manuscripts, and readers developing their taste for writing with bite.
- We connect through relationships. Relationships between writers, between writers and editors, readers and stories, and so many more connections we can’t wait to discover.
Oh, and we’re a not-for-profit organisation meaning every penny is reinvested back into Hack, never lining some random shareholder’s pocket. All the money stays within our ecosystem, enabling us to provide alternative publishing routes for our writers and bring great books to readers.
How to Manifest Change: Forging a New Publishing Ecosystem
If you’ve got this far, you share our frustrations at the lack of choice writers have in getting published today.
Hack is not about making raw writing into glossy publications–that much is a given. It’s about the process and craft of getting there. Writers and readers tell us how publishing should change, we provide the platform, and the magic happens in the space between.
We are on a mission to help first-time authors, new and emerging writers, and those just starting out on their writing journey turn first drafts into finished manuscripts.
We are not a traditional publishing house, nor do we think self-publishing is accessible or sustainable for most people. And because the process of writing is gloriously slow, we believe adding all the steep steps to securing a book deal–which just keep getting steeper, by the way–is making it impossible for fresh blood to ever get their books on the shelf.
Hence, our attitude is to strip back.
Writers can get in touch with us directly about their projects, even if they’re not entirely polished. We offer a curated range of services–bear with us as they all launch in 2026–that make space for new writing opportunities at any stage of the creative process.
We don’t turn our noses up at those wishing to #tradpub or self-publish. Our services can help those of you on that path too. Yet, at our core, we can co-create a distinct alternative.
Our vision is to see a world where writers create their own choices.
